HughesNet Satellite Internet: Learning the Essentials
When getting to know someone new, everyone always asks the same basic questions. Getting to know the basics can lead to a healthy relationship – with a friend or with a business. The same concept holds true when it comes to getting to know HughesNet satellite Internet.
HughesNet frequently asked questions
How does HughesNet work?
When you sit down in front of your computer and type in a URL, a signal from your modem flows to your satellite dish at home, which sends it to the Hughes satellite in space. The satellite in space then alerts the Hughes Network Operations Center, or the NOC. The NOC locates the URL you requested, and sends it back to your home computer through the same path.
Do I need to install my HughesNet system myself?
A local HughesNet-trained professional will install your system. You might even be able to take advantage of FREE standard installation.† Call one of our representatives today to find out which HughesNet plans are eligible for free standard installation.
What does the installation process include?
First, your HughesNet-trained installation professional will mount your satellite dish so that it has a clear view of the southern sky. Then, he or she installs a coaxial cable jack in the same room as your modem. Finally, your installer routes two exterior coaxial cables from your actual satellite dish to the coaxial cable in your home.
Do I need to purchase HughesNet equipment?
HughesNet satellite Internet equipment is available for purchase or lease. Purchasing equipment makes the equipment yours permanent, while leasing is a great way to lower upfront costs. Call us today to learn more about your equipment options.
Where is HughesNet available?
HughesNet is available throughout the continental United States. HughesNet is best suited for rural areas, where DSL and cable aren’t available, and where dial-up is often a last-resort Internet provider.
Which computers are compatible with HughesNet?
Both Macs and PCs are compatible with HughesNet, but your computer must meet these minimum requirements:
- Mac OS 10.1 or higher
- Windows 2000 PE or higher (including VISTA)
Can I use the phone while online with HughesNet satellite Internet?
Unlike dial-up Internet service providers, HughesNet does not use your phone line to provide an Internet connection, which makes it possible to use the phone and the Internet simultaneously.
Which online activities are not compatible with satellite Internet service providers?
Twitch games, like multiplayer games, are time sensitive. Because of latency issues, they do not work well with HughesNet. Also, a Virtual Private Network, or VPN, can also slow your Internet connection by as much as 75 percent. However, if you do decide to use a VPN, simply disabling it after use will restore your HughesNet connection back to full capacity.
Can I connect multiple computers to my HughesNet service?
Yes, multiple computers can connect to your HughesNet service. However, outside equipment to set up you home network is not included with your HughesNet plan. If multiple computers are using high-bandwidth applications, a decrease in connectivity speed is possible.
